My name is Chelsey Calderara, and I live with the daily realities of quadriplegic cerebral palsy and a host of other medical challenges. It’s a relentless journey filled with obstacles that many may never fully understand. Each day, I am faced with the struggle of feeling like a burden, relying on others for tasks that most people don’t think twice about—like picking up something they dropped or simply opening a door.
My disabilities often draw unwanted attention, and my tremors can become so severe that I inadvertently send things flying off my tray, adding to my anxiety and discomfort in public spaces. The stares and whispers that follow can be overwhelming, making outings feel like a battle I dread facing. I often find myself unable to perceive small changes in elevation, leading to the frightening experience of rolling off curbs and sidewalks.
In my quest for independence, I once attempted to train my own service dogs, fueled by a hope for greater autonomy. Unfortunately, those efforts didn’t pan out, but my determination to have a service dog has only grown stronger. I recognize now that to succeed, I need support — support that I simply cannot achieve alone.
